Service Contracts Can Deliver Significant Cost Savings

As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This phrase, uttered by Ben Franklin in 1736, simply means that it’s better to stop something from happening than it is to go in and repair the damage after the fact.

Considering that the average cost to repair an HVAC system ranges between $150 and $650, with the labor alone for technicians averaging between $75 and $150 per hour, having a service contract in place can definitely be an effective cost reduction strategy for many home owners.  Of course, those are just baseline numbers; if you have to pay for an emergency visit, the costs can quickly spiral.

In a worst case scenario, if the system breaks, you may even have to leave the house for a few days to avoid potentially dangerous weather conditions, such as extreme hot or cold. The costs for the hotel alone could far exceed the cost of a service contract.

Those who understand the benefits of HVAC service contracts realize that having a technician inspect the system can help to identify small problems and fix them before something disastrous occurs. Some of the other benefits of having regularly scheduled HVAC maintenance include:

  • Increased energy efficiency
  • Prevention of system damage
  • Higher levels of comfort
  • Identify/troubleshoot minor issues
  • Extend life of system
  • Reduce energy bills
  • Ensure safe operations

Here at Green Dot, we offer our clients the opportunity to join our Preventative Maintenance Comfort Club, to help them reduce costs and head off major issues. Comfort Club members receive two maintenance visits per year, a 15 percent discount off the cost of a repair, a five percent discount on new equipment and duct systems, and no additional after-hours, holiday or weekend charges.

In the case of just one after-hours or holiday visit where a repair needed to be made, the cost for joining the Comfort Club would more than likely pay for itself. The list below includes a few maintenance coverage items that are included in a visit for Comfort Club members:

  • Inspect the system and ductwork
  • Check exposed equipment and pipes for leaks
  • Inspect thermostat condition and operation
  • Check heat strips, defrost controls and reversing valve of the heat pump
  • Start the capacity compressor and compressor fans to check recommended and actual MFD ratings
  • Inspect the indoor and outdoor coils
  • Add algae tabs in the drain pan
  • Test compressor protection device
  • Inspect condenser and overflow switch
  • Check current draw of compressor and the refrigerant operating pressure

There are many other items included in a standard maintenance visit for Comfort Club members, and there are many intangible benefits that could potentially arise from having an expert visit your home and inspect your system for issues.  For more information about joining our Comfort Club, please call one of our offices or email info@greendothvac.com.
