How to Choose the Right HVAC Contractor

The options for HVAC companies in the coastal Carolinas are as varied as the restaurants that make up the downtown Riverwalk area here in Wilmington. And, just as picking that perfect place to have dinner is not as simple as it appears to be on the surface, choosing the right HVAC company is not as easy as simply picking up the phone and calling the first number that comes up after a Google search or a referral from a friend.

To protect your interests, property and finances, there are many factors that should be reviewed and evaluated before choosing an HVAC provider. Of course, many consumers will make a decision that is mostly based on cost; however there are many other items to consider prior to moving forward.

The old saying that reputation matters didn’t become an old saying because it’s untrue. Before you agree to let work begin on your house, it’s a good idea to search the company on the Better Business Bureau website, read Google reviews and ask for references. An established local contractor should be able to provide at least three references. When you call the contractor’s references, a few questions to consider include asking their former clients about the installation quality/timing, responsiveness, and whether or not they were able to stay within the stated budget.

Liability insurance is a no-brainer for someone who has been in business for a while and has experience. A contractor’s liability insurance protects you from financial harm if that individual should happen to get injured on your property. If the person you are considering does not have liability insurance, then that is a big red flag and a solid indicator they are not a professional.

Certified and Licensed

It may seem obvious to say an HVAC contractor should have completed the minimal training requirements to earn a license. Likewise, a potential HVAC contractor should be able to show you related industry certifications, so you can rest assured they know what they are doing. As with many things in life, it doesn’t hurt to ask.

Evaluates Home Adequately

Similar to liability insurance, a contractor that provides a quote without an in-depth analysis of your home’s unique characteristics is not a professional. One of the most important tasks an HVAC contractor will perform is a load calculation, to ensure the size and capabilities of the system are matched to your home. Make no mistake:  a good installation starts with a good inspection, so this is an effective means of determining if the potential service provider is a pro, right from the start.
